Why?
No one has to pay to read the articles we publish. We think that’s a great thing – and you probably do, too.
But the fact that the article is free to you (and everyone else) does not make it free to us. All of the editors at Sociological Science volunteer their time, but we still incur expenses for professional copy-editing, internet domain and web hosting, registration of our articles with CrossRef/DOI, submission handling, administrative costs, and so forth. We do not have an institution backing us, nor do we want the journal to become inextricably linked to one institution. And, let’s be honest, we couldn’t make very much money selling ads to sociologists.
What is left are submission fees and publication fees. Here’s the rub: we want to keep these fees as low as possible. We don’t want the size of your research account to determine whether your paper will be published. As a result, we have some of the lowest publication fees compared to other Open Access journals.
But those fees don’t fully cover the costs of producing a high-quality journal. That’s why we are asking you to become a member of the Society for Sociological Science.
As a member, you help cover our operating expenses and ensure the long-run sustainability of the journal. Your membership dues keep our publication fees low and more affordable to scholars with limited research funds.
The Society for Sociological Science is an independent, non-profit professional association whose mission is to promote and advance scientifically oriented sociological research and scholarship.
The primary activity of the Society is to operate Sociological Science. We don’t hold parties host conferences (yet), have a headquarters office, give out research grants, publish newsletters, or try to lobby Congress.
All we do is publish Sociological Science. As a result, every dollar of dues you pay as a member goes directly to offset the journal’s operating costs. In short, every dollar helps make high-quality, timely sociological research be freely and immediately available to everyone.
Oh, and by the way, we think you will find our membership dues refreshingly low.
Sounds like a great deal, right?
